 한여름 밤의 열정과 낭만 ‘다른 문화와 가치 공감’

 쏟아지는 밤하늘의 별이 무대의 배경이 되고, 새와 매미 계곡물 소리가 효과음이 되는 국내 최고의 야외연극축제인 ‘거창국제연극제’ 개막을 진심으로 축하합니다. 

거창군민 여러분과 멀리서 찾아주신 관객 여러분들을 뜨거운 박수로 환영하며, 이 자리에 함께 하게 되어 영광입니다.

 지난 1989년 시작한 이후 ‘자연·인간·연극’이라는 주제로 올해 34회째 열리고 있는 거창국제연극제는 수준 높은 작품과 대중성을 겸비한 흥행성으로 대한민국 최고의 문화관광 공연예술 축제로 한국연극 발전과 산업화에 크게 기여 해왔습니다.

 특히 거창국제연극제는 여름 휴가가 절정에 달하는 7월 마지막 금요일에 시작해서 8월 중순까지 펼쳐지는 축제로 낮에는 시원한 계곡에서 더위를 식히고, 밤에는 연극을 관람하는 흐름이 하나의 문화패턴으로 자리 잡아 한여름 밤의 열정과 낭만을 쏟아내고 있습니다.

 올해는 ‘고전의 울림, 변화의 메시지’라는 슬로건으로 총 51개 단체 76회의 국내외 공연이 펼쳐집니다. 또 해외 6개국의 흥미진진한 초청작품, 프린지공연과 경연작품들을 만날 수 있어 세계 연극의 다양성을 경험할 수 있는 기회를 제공할 것입니다.

 무엇보다도 이번 연극제를 통해 거창이 아름다운 자연과 예술의 도시라는 것을 다시 한 번 확인할 수 있을 것이라고 기대합니다. 연극이라는 예술 매개체를 통해 서로 다른 문화와 가치를 이해하고 공감하며, 더 나은 세상을 만들어나가는 데 기여할 수 있기를 바랍니다.

 아울러 거창국제연극제를 통해 거창의 아름다움을 국내와 세계에 알리고, 세계 3대 야외연극축제로 나아갈 수 있도록 여러 연극인들이 하나로 뭉쳐 더 좋은 아이디어로 지역문화 예술 활성화와 경제 발전에도 기여할 수 있기를 바랍니다.

 Passion and Romance of midsummer night ‘sympathizing with different cultures and values’

 I sincerely congratulate the opening of ‘Keochang International Festival of Theatre’, Korea's best outdoor theater festival where the stars pouring down from the night sky becomes the backdrop of the stage, and the sounds of birds, cicadas, and valley streams become sound effects. I warmly welcome Geochang residents and the audience who have come from afar with enthusiastic applause, and I am honored to be here with you.

 Since it began in 1989, Keochang International Festival of Theatre, which has been held for 34th time this year under the theme of 'Nature, Humans, and Theatre,' has greatly contributed to the development and industrialization of Korean theatre as Korea's top cultural tourism performing arts festival with high-quality performances and popularity.

 Especially, Keochang International Festival of Theatre starts on the last Friday of July, when the summer vacation season is at its peak, and it runs until mid-August. And it has established a cultural pattern that visitors can cool off in the refreshing valleys during the day and watch performances at night, and it pours out the passion and romance of midsummer nights.

 This year, under the slogan ‘the Resonance of Classics, the Message of Change,’ a total of 76 performances by 51 groups from home and abroad will be played. Additionally, it will present you the opportunity to experience the diversity of world theater with fascinating invited official performances and fringe performances, contest performances from 6 foreign countries.

 Above all, I expect that Geochang will be confirmed as a city of beautiful nature and art once again through this theater festival. I hope that we can understand and sympathize with different cultures and values, and contribute to creating a better world by theater, which is a medium of art.

 Furthermore, I hope that Keochang International Festival of Theatre promotes the beauty of Geochang both domestically and internationally, and to make it one of the world’s top 3 outdoor theater festival, all theater people unite with better ideas to contribute to the revitalization local culture and arts, and economic development.

 Lastly, I would like to sincerely send thank to the officials of Geochang-gun and the Geochang Cultural Foundation, and all the participating theater people who have worked hard for the successful opening of Keochang International Festival of Theatre. I also hope this festival will be a meaningful theater festival full of rich emotions and enjoyment to audience.

 푸른산과 맑은 물이 어우러져 자연의 아름다움을 자랑하는 이곳 수승대에서 역사와 전통을 자랑하는 우리 거창국제연극제가 올해도 화려한 개막을 맞이하게 되었습니다.

 34년이라는 긴 세월 동안 거창국제연극제는 단순한 연극 축제를 넘어, 예술과 문화의 다양성을 존중하며 국제적인 문화 교류의 장으로 자리매김하고 있으며, 특히 올해는‘고전의 울림, 변화의 메시지’라는 슬로건 아래 국내외 51개 단체의 풍성하고 다채로운 공연이 여러분들을 찾아뵐 예정이라, 여러분께 잊지 못할 감동과 영감을 선사할 것으로 크게 기대하고 있습니다.

 예술은 우리의 삶에 위안과 용기를 주고 세상을 바라보는 새로운 시각을 제시하는 등 중요한 역할을 하고 있어, 변화와 혁신의 시대 속에서 사는 현대인들은 예술의 힘을 더욱 절실히 느끼고 있지 않나 생각합니다.

 연극제를 찾는 관람객께서는 무대 위 연기자들과 무언의 소통과 교류를 통해 일상에서 지친 몸과 마음을 힐링하고, 힘차게 다시 시작할 수 있는 생각과 영감을 얻어 가시기를 바랍니다.

 Our historic and traditional Keochang International Festival of Theatre has once again had its grand opening here in Suseungdae, the area which boasts the beauty of nature beside the harmony of green mountains and pure water.

 For over 34 years, Keochang International Festival of Theatre has established itself as a place for international cultural exchange in respect of the diversity of art and culture more than just theatre festival.

 Especially this year, total of 51 teams from home and abroad are expected to present to you abundant and colorful performances under the slogan “The resonance of Classics, the message of Change”. So I am in great hope that they will share an unforgettable experience with you and provide inspiration.

 I think art plays an important role in such as giving comfort and courage in our lives and presenting a new perspective on the world and that’s what makes the modern people living in the era of rapid change and innovation need to feel the power of art more desperately.

 I hope that the audience who visits the theatre festival get to heal your exhausted body and soul from daily life through the unspoken communication and interaction, and to get the idea and inspiration to reboot with energy.

 Lastly, expressing my sincere gratitude to everyone who worked hard for the successful opening of the 34th Geochang International Festival of Theatre, I wish Keochang International Festival of Theatre to be a wonderful festival filled with unforgettable and pleasant memories.

 거창국제연극제는 아름다운 자연환경과 함께하는 야외 연극축제로 매년 연극 발전의 초석이 되는 예비 연극인을 발굴하는 것은 물론 국‧내외 우수작품을 초청하여 문화 교류 발전에 기여해 왔습니다.

 올해에는‘고전의 울림, 변화의 메시지’라는 슬로건 아래 15일간 다양한 장르의 연극을 선보이게 됩니다. 이번 연극제를 통해 연극인과 관객들이 함께 소통하고 하나가 되는 뜻깊은 자리가 되기를 바랍니다.

 I appreciate the hard work of all festival officials who successfully prepared for the festival, including Geochang-gun Governor Gu Inmo. Furthermore, I extend a warm welcome to all visitors to Geochang, Gyeongnam for the Keochang International Festival of Theatre.

 Keochang International Festival of Theatre is an outdoor festival with a beautiful natural environment and it has contributed to the development of cultural exchange by discovering emerging theater practitioners who lay the foundation for theater development every year as well as inviting excellent performances from home and abroad.

 This year, it will present various performances for 15 days under the slogan ‘the Resonance of Classics, the Message of change’. I hope it becomes a meaningful place where theater practitioners and the audience can communicate and come together through this Keochang International Festival of Theatre.

 Also, I expect it to be a pleasant time for the audience to cool off the midsummer heat by watching performances and various side events experiences.

 Gyeongsangnam-do will continue its unwavering efforts and attention to creating a cultural and artistic environment in the region, including theater, so that the lives of residents in Gyeongsangnam-do can be filled with happiness and hope.

 부산에 국제영화제가 있다면 거창에는 국제연극제가 있습니다. 영화가 부산의 분위기를 바꿨다면 연극이 거창의 이미지를 바꾸고 있습니다. 거창 연극제에 와 본 사람이 200만 명이 넘는다고 들었습니다. 그분 들은 가족들과 친구들과 연극을 즐기면서 거창이 얼마나 매력적인 곳인지 알게 됐을 겁니다.

 저는 지역소멸 대책 중 가장 효과적인 것은 해당 지역이 또 찾고 싶은 곳, 꼭 가서 놀고 싶은 곳이 되는 것이라고 생각합니다. 찾고 싶은 곳, 놀고 싶은 곳은 산세도 수려해야겠지만, 그 곳에서만 체험할 수 있는 무언가가 있어야 합니다. 거창 연극제는 바로 그 무엇인가를 주고 있다고 생각합니다. 다음 글은 KBS 경남방송총국이 방송한 기사 중 일부입니다.

 ‘ '고전의 울림, 변화의 메시지'라는 주제로 열리는 올해 거창국제연극제에는 독일·폴란드의 전통 마임 아티스트와 벨기에의 연극단 ‘스카겐'을 포함해 프랑스, 네덜란드, 중국 등 6개 나라 해외 연극단체가 참가합니다.’ 

 아마 거창 연극제의 국제성을 강조하기 위해 이렇게 썼을 겁니다. 저는 정통예술인 연극의 진중함에 더해 프린지 공연의 발랄함이 잘 조화를 이뤘기에 너무 무겁지도 너무 가볍지도 않은 축제로 발전하고 있다고 생각합니다. 누구나가 축제의 주인이 될 수 있고 축제장 어디에서나 작은 공연이 펼쳐지는 곳이야말로 우리 모두가 찾아가서 놀고 싶은 곳이기 때문입니다.

 얼마 전 OECD 관계자가 거창을 찾았는데 "인구 감소는 한국뿐만 아니라 OECD 국가 전체 문제인데 거창군의 인구 감소 대응 정책이 매력적이라면서 11월 프랑스 파리 OECD 본부에서 열릴 인구 감소 대응 정책 워크숍에 거창군의 참여를 요청했습니다. 거창이 이렇게 주목받는 데는 거창 연극제의 영향도 꽤 있을 것으로 생각합니다.

 ‘여수밤바다’ 라는 노래를 듣고 여수를 찾아가는 사람이 생기듯이 거창 연극제를 보려고 거창을 찾는 발길이 이어지길 바랍니다. 연극의 3요소는 배우 관객 무대입니다. 뛰어난 배우와 빼어난 산세를 배경으로 멋진 무대는 마련돼 있으니 이제 많은 분들이 찾으셔서 이 모든 걸 즐길 일만 남았습니다. 저도 그 즐거움에 동참하겠습니다.

 If there is BIFF in Busan, there is Keochang International Festival of Theatre in Geochang. If film changes the atmosphere of Busan, theatre has been changing the image of Geochang. I heard that over 2 million people have attended Keochang International Festival of Theatre. They must have discovered how attractive Geochang is while enjoying plays with their families and friends.

 I think the most effective strategy against local extinction is making the area a place people want to revisit or a place they really want to visit to hang out. A place people want to revisit or spend time should have beautiful scenery, but it should also offer something unique that can only be experienced there. I believe Keochang International Festival of Theatre provides that exactly. The following is a part of an article from KBS Gyeongnam Broadcasting Office.

 ‘Theatre teams from 6 countries, including traditional mime artists from Germany and Poland, and the theatre team ‘SKaGen’ from Belgium, are participating in this year's Keochang International Festival of Theatre, held under the theme 'The Resonance of Classics, the Message of Change'. Participating countries include China, France, and the Netherlands.‘

 It must have been written like that to emphasize the international nature of Keochang International Festival of Theatre. I believe that the solemnity of traditional theater, combined with the vivacity of fringe performances, has created a festival that strikes a perfect balance—not too heavy, yet not too light. The fact that anyone can become the main character of the festival and that small performances unfold everywhere on the festival grounds is precisely why it's a place where we all want to visit and hang out.

 Lately, an OECD official visited Geochang and praised Geochang's policies in response to population decline, noting that this issue is a challenge not only for Korea but also for all OECD countries. The official requested Geochang's participation in a workshop on population decline counter policies, which will be held at the OECD headquarters in Paris, France, in November. I believe that Keochang International Festival of Theatre has also significantly affected to Geochang gaining such attention. 

 Just as people visit Yeosu after hearing the song 'The Yeosu Night Sea,' I hope that visitors continue to come to Geochang to experience Keochang International Festival of Theatre. The three elements of theatre are actors, audience, and the stage. With outstanding actors and splendid stages set against the backdrop of beautiful mountains, everything is prepared for many to come and enjoy. I am also eager to join in this joy

 역사와 명성을 자랑하는 제34회 거창국제연극제의 개막을 축하드리며 함께 해주신 국·내외 연극인, 관객 여러분 반갑습니다.

 천혜 자연경관을 갖춘 거창은 충분히 아름다운 고장입니다. 그런 아름다운 고장에서 전통을 이어온 거창국제연극제의 역사가 30년을 넘겼습니다.

 거창국제연극제는 지역 주민들뿐만 아니라 전국 각지에서 수많은 관광객들이 모여드는 대표적인 여름철 축제 중 하나입니다.

 축제기간 동안 국내외 다양한 극단들이 참여하여 공연을 선보이고 관객들은 아름다운 자연속에서 예술작품을 즐기며 내면에 감춰진 인간의 아름다움을 끄집어 냅니다. 문화의 힘은 우리 삶을 풍요롭게 만들고 인간의 정신적 가치를 높이는 데 매우 중요한 역할을 합니다.

 그 중에서도 연극은 사람들에게 감정을 불러일으키고 상상력을 자극하며, 사회적 문제나 인간의 내면을 탐구하는 등 다양한 주제를 다루며 관객들에게 감동과 영감을 줍니다. 또한, 연극은 배우와 연출가, 작가, 무대 디자이너 등 많은 예술가들이 참여하는 종합 예술이기 때문에 이를 통해 다양한 분야에서의 창조성과 협업 능력을 발휘할 수 있습니다. 이는 개인뿐만 아니라 사회 전체의 발전에도 큰 도움이 됩니다.

 따라서, 연극을 사랑하는 것은 단순히 취미생활을 즐기는 것 이상으로 문화의 힘을 증진시키는 데 기여하는 것이라고 볼 수 있습니다. 연극을 비롯한 다양한 문화 활동을 적극적으로 참여함으로써 우리는 보다 나은 세상을 만들어 나갈 수 있을 것입니다. 

 그런 의미에서 제34회 거창국제연극제개막은 더욱더 큰 의미를 가지며 앞으로도 지속적으로 성장해 나갈 것이라 믿습니다.

 Congratulating the opening of the 34th Keochang International Festival of Theatre, which boasts a rich history and high reputation, I’m glad to greet theater people from home and abroad, as well as the audience. 

 Geochang, blessed with beautiful natural scenery, is a truly beautiful region. Keochang International Festival of Theatre, which has upheld its tradition in this beautiful city, has now surpassed 30 years of history. 

 Keochang International Festival of Theatre is one of the representative summer festivals that attract numerous tourists not only from the local community but also from across the nation. 

 During the festival, various theater teams from home and abroad participate in and show the performances, and audience draw out the hidden beauty of human nature within themselves whilst enjoying artistic performances amidst the beautiful nature. The power of culture plays very important role in enriching our lives and enhancing the spiritual values of human dignity. 

 Among them, theater evokes feelings in human, stimulates their imagination and gives audience impression and inspiration by covering a range of topics such as exploring inside of human nature or social issues. In addition, because theater is a composite art that many artists work together including actors, directors, writers and stage designers, it allows theater practitioners to demonstrate their creativity and ability to collaborate across various fields. This contributes greatly to the development of society not only limited to individual development. 

 Therefore, loving theater is contributing to enhancing the power of culture more than just enjoying a hobby. By actively participating in various cultural activity including theater, we will be able to create a better world. 

 In this sense, the opening of the 34th Keochang International Festival of Theatre has much bigger meaning and I believe that it will continue to get better.
